Codex Alimentarius

The Codex Alimentarius Commission sets international food standards that protect consumer health and support fair practices in global food trade. For special dietary foods, Codex plays a critical role in harmonising requirements across markets and supporting regulatory alignment worldwide.

ISDI actively engages in this work to ensure that Codex standards remain science‑based, high‑quality and reflective of the specific needs of vulnerable populations who rely on dietary foods.

ISDI is an official Codex Observer

As a Codex Observer, ISDI provides technical expertise and science‑based input to support the development, review and implementation of Codex Standards.

Through its participation in Codex, ISDI helps ensure:

  • Strong, internationally recognised standards for specialised nutrition
  • The protection of vulnerable consumers who rely on these products
  • Harmonised global regulatory frameworks that support safe, high‑quality products
  • A level playing field for industry through clear, consistent rules

Scientific and technical expertise

ISDI members include global experts in nutrition, food composition, food safety and regulatory frameworks for specialised nutrition products. ISDI contributes:

  • Scientific input to nutrient composition discussions
  • Data and evidence to support risk assessments

Support for science-based standards

ISDI contributes constructively to ensuring that Codex Standards:

  • Reflect the latest scientific knowledge
  • Address the needs of vulnerable populations (infants, young children, patients with medical conditions and other people with special dietary needs)
  • Are globally applicable and feasible to implement
